Honduran Police Make Arrest in 2009 Murder of a Canadian in Roatan

Verna Martens has amassed a thick file folder of notes and documents and hounded government officials in Canada and Honduras with letters and phone calls since her son was shot and killed in 2009.

A few days ago, a consular official told her that police in the Central American country had a suspect in custody.

He and his wife, Krissy, had vacationed there the Christmas…

Aaron Rose, a young American on vacation with his family on the island of Roatan, Honduras, took a kayak off the island's West End yesterday to watch the sun set and was pulled out to sea. Today, he was rescued by U.S. Blackhawk helicopters from Joint Task Force Bravo in Soto Cano, Honduras.

A Happy Ending on Roatan (and How A Thoughtless Individual Screwed Countless People)

Last week, a U.S. citizen (whose name I will not mention out of respect for his family) pulled an idiotic stunt on the island of Roatan in the Bay Islands of Honduras. The vacationer, very intoxicated, got into an argument with his girlfriend and stormed out into the night without cash or his cellphone and didn't return.

You may know Roatan from posts here as a place that is aggressively marketed as a safe, inexpensive destination to vacation and retire.…

Roatan: A Case Study in the Irresponsibility of the "Travel Media"

One of my biggest gripes for years now has been the lack of a truly critical travel media that examines the industry it purports to cover with an eye toward more than the prettiest locales and the best deals. For an industry that rivals energy and agriculture in terms of economic clout, travel/tourism receives surprisingly little media scrutiny. In this article, maritime attorney Jim Walker articulates some of the same frustrations.…

The Travel-Intel Gap: How Government & Media Fail Travelers

No government keeps credible or reliable track of how many of its citizens disappear while traveling abroad annually or how many foreign nationals disappear while traveling in its country. This information deficit has major implications for the global traveling public. In the absence of timely, credible news, data, and analysis, how can travelers make informed decisions? How can media contextualize “missing abroad” stories as to whether they are anomalies or symptoms of a larger…
