Canadian Tourist Murdered on Roatan, Honduras

A 34-year-old conservation officer with the Department of Fisheries and Oceans in B.C. has been shot dead on the island of Roatan in Honduras. Tim Vallee, who worked for the DFO Pacific Region, was on holiday in Honduras this past week when he was robbed at gunpoint and shot in the head Wednesday.

This is only the latest in a recent spate (beyond the usual) of violent crime on this island that, if you believe the travel porn that comes up when you Google its name, offers nothing but beautiful beaches, fishing, and diving. Please do INTENSIVE HOMEWORK before traveling to these Third World "paradises". Don't just Google them and check your embassy's website -- embassies are useless and have no incentive to fully inform you about the reality on the ground. Think long and hard before investing in this part of the world -- there are usually very good reasons for "bargains".
