While the State Dept. website is one of the best places to start researching a destination, it should be the beginning, not the end, of your research. State's descriptions of the safety/security situation on the ground in most Third World countries tend to be incomplete, dated, and driven by considerations other than the safety of travelers. I strongly recommend following local/regional media and using social media to get in touch with people who have non-business interests in the locale you are thinking about visiting.
Obviously some countries are safer than others, but "bad areas" of any country or city should be avoided. You would be most secure with a tour group or registered tour guide!!
Most countries are fine, and you should enjoy your ability to travel!!
