What we know..

Owns aquarium/pet store in Matamoros, MX, and disappeared during the battles between the Mexican military and the Gulf Cartels and Zetas in that city, beginning on Nov.5, 2010. US Consulate has only ascertained that he is not in any hospital in that city or surrounding cities, and nothing more. They say they are not able to do any searching themselves but must rely on the Mexican authorities.

We have the same issue - State Dept believes its reasonable for me and my Dad to be expected to go to Tegucigalpa (one of the highest murder rates on the planet! Embassy staff don't even leave the fortress-like compound) to plead for the Honduran courts to tell us what State already knows.

Jeff... I don't think we want a "presumptive death finding" in John's case.. that will just give them a reason to stop investigating and stop looking!! He's not been missing but less than four months... It's too soon to stop looking!!!

I can't believe they would suggest you risk your life, just to get an update on the investigation. Are they so out of touch with reality that they think you would even consider it? Why is it so difficult to answer the phone and answer a couple of questions? Sounds like just another maneuver to make it sound like they are doing something, when in reality, they aren't. I'm so sorry.....

Deborah - talk with Adriana. She had a breakthrough in this department.

We need to get a real campaign going in Texas. We can tie it into Phase 2 of my campaign re: consular finding of presumptive death. Is there anyone who might volunteer to go through the MAP community and collect the names and contact info for all our Texans? We've got quite a lot of them - a good foundation for a phone/fax/e-mail campaign.

Well talked to the Consulates office again this week and the Mexican police told them it was still a open investigation with Johns case. If I had anything I would like to add to the report or find out where they were I could come to Matamoros and come see them or the Consulate said maybe hire a lawyer that works on both sides of the border. Does our government really think it would be safe for a woman to go into a town that is constantly in battle with the Cartel?  Give me a break.

We certainly can't negotiate from weakness, and our leaders are bending over so far backwards to be "friends" with everyone that they look like pretzels....

The U.S. is in a war in which it refuses to fight back. Cartel gangs attack our citizens with impunity. Gangs -- and now the Mexican military -- come over our borders to do their mischief, and we do nothing. Pakistan holds our diplomat hostage in contravention of a well-established international principle (whether you agree with it or not) of diplomatic immunity -- and we conduct behind the scenes negotiation that makes us look even weaker than we already do, instead of taking the appropriate response of suspending diplomatic immunity for Pakistan and putting all their official operatives in the U.S. under strictest surveillance so they can be picked up when they screw up. It's time to storm the Bastille and take our country back from our jelly-spined "leaders".

OMG THEY DONT CARE ABOUT U.S LAW ENFORSMENT,THEY DONT CARE ABOUT U.S POLICE,OR GOVERMENT,, THESE MEN ARE THE LAW IN MEXICO AND THE REAL LAW IS RIGHT BESIDE THEM AND DOING NOTHING.WHEN I WENT TO MEXICO I ACTUALLY ASKED IF A CIVILIAN COULD CARRY A WEAPON FOR PROTECTION AND THEIR ANSWER WAS NO..BASICALLY ONLY THE POLICE AND CRIMINALS HAVE GUNS AND EVERYONE ELSE  IS S.O.L

Just now on the news, the report from his wounded partner indicated that the cartel KNEW that they were  US agents and that they were unarmed..... Talk about putting a bullseye on them!!! ARM our agents in Mexico!!!
Comment by Renee Vorbach on February 16, 2011 at 8:21pm
And the insanity of it is that the two ICE agents are federal agents, on loan to Mexico, and yet they were NOT allowed to carry any weapons.... so they were sitting ducks for that ambush... If Mexico wants our people to work in Mexico, they need to be allowed to protect themselves... To be without weapons in that situation is unpardonable, everybody ELSE seems to have an abundance of fire power!!
