Help Find Tristan Ananda Perry, Apparently Abducted in Thailand

A Facebook group has been created to raise awareness of the case of Tristan Ananda Perry, the son of a British man and a Thai woman who allegedly has been abducted by his mother's family. The Missing Americans Project does not have many resources in Asia, but we hope our growing network will help the Perry's find someone who is willing and able to help them.

AP Story: Still No Sign of McStay Family

Mexican investigators have ended a search in a tiny tourist town for a California family, marking another dead end in an investigation that began three months ago when the family disappeared. Baja California state police said Thursday that seven investigators searched over three days for Joseph and Summer McStay and their two young boys after an FBI alert of a possible sighting in El Rosario, 200 miles south of the border. The McStays were last heard from Feb. 4. They left their dogs hungry…

Security In Latin America

Although most people enjoy great vacations to Central America, there is an underlying danger that people must be made aware of. Our focus is on security. There are cases of tourist missing in our country ( Costa Rica ) and surrounding countries, however, there are also many more cases of expats being targeted for robbery, extortion, rape, even murder. In the past few years we have known more than 50 cases in Costa Rica alone that involved a great deal of violence, some resulting in death.… Continue

What the U.S. Embassy in Costa Rica Has to Say About Safety There

A-freakin'-mazing! This is the U.S. Embassy's page about safety in Costa Rica. Not a mention of the disappearances and murders over the past year. Here's the kind of thing the Embassy warns about:

  • A tire of a rental car went flat, and people who stopped to "help change the tire" stole U.S. passports, bags, cash, and camera.
  • A hotel room was broken into during the day, and items the tourist had hidden were…

Goodbye, Joe

On Mother's Day 2009, my brother disappeared after leaving the beach on the West End of Isla de Roatan, Honduras. I didn't know at the time that a month earlier, almost to the day, Ron Scheepstra had disappeared from Xcalak, Mexico, a remote village on the Yucatan Peninsula close enough to Roatan for Ron and his fishing buddies to be using Roatan tide charts. Over the next few months, more men would disappear in Central America and the Caribbean: Alex Humphrey, in Panama; David Gimelfarb in…

Easter 2010

It was Easter Sunday last year that I was informed by the US Consulate by phone that my husband, Ronald was missing in Xcalak, Mexico. While April 11th is the actual 1 year anniversary of his disappearance, I still associate it with Easter. Holidays are such a difficult time for families of missing loved ones. I have survived this past year, by the grace of God. I celebrated the true meaning of Easter with my daughter, son in law and grandson in Dallas this year. I truly believe I will see Ron… Continue

How Twitter May Have Kept a Student Journalist From Disappearing

This story goes back to 2008 (I would love to know if there are similar, more recent examples) and is a great demonstration of how timely, thoughtful use of our increasingly mobile social media can prevent a disappearance or, at the very least, leave a trail for investigators to follow. James Buck, a graduate student from the University of California-Berkeley, was in Mahalla, Egypt, covering an anti-government protest when he and…

The IRS

I just spent 2 hours on the phone with the IRS and THEY don't know how I am supposed to file our income taxes...they will get back with me.
Is anyone else having this problem, since the missing can not sign their return?

Asking The Right Questions (Part 1): How Many Missing?

A reporter recently asked me two questions about the material I've been posting, and they were exactly the right questions:

* What do you find suspicious about these disappearances?

* You talk about 8 men missing in the region in 10 months -- how many disappeared in the prior 10 months?

Here is an excellent example of a journalist doing his job correctly -- holding me accountable for my assertions and seeking hard facts and data.

I'll begin with the second… Continue

A Resource for Anyone Who Has Lost Someone in Thailand

People go missing in Thailand on a regular basis. More often than not, it seems they have simply neglected to stay in touch and are unaware that people back home are worried about them and usually turn up unharmed. If your loved one seems to have vanished into thin air and all attempts to contact or trace them have failed, you can post a missing person announcement for free on this site.

You should… Continue

Send Lawyers, Guns, and Money

"What do you want us to do?"

Over the frustrating past 10 months, we have heard some version of that question over and over from the elected and appointed officials who are paid to lead us at home and look after our interests abroad. When we call the U.S. embassies in the countries where our loved ones have gone missing, we vaguely expect (having watched too much TV) that someone in a wood-paneled office at the far end of the phone line is taking down a dark blue binder with… Continue
