it harder but I understand it can be done -track phone number would hit a tower on the us side -do you know the phone company he bought it from?

Richard he had a pre pay type cell phone. Can they find info on these phones?

Renee, Deborah: Have you engaged your Senators and Congressmen? I have found (and it has been confirmed from folks inside State) that the only way to get attention is for them to be inundated with calls from Sens and Reps. I would advise getting a phone campaign going in Texas and anywhere else that you have concentrations of friends and family.

ok so is the phone company american or mexican -there is a way to locate the phone if its still on -they may also be able to go back in the records and locate it at its last use....

No Renee this did happen on Wed. night in Matamoros. It is a mess there and now I cant get hold of the American Cons. office again. Got thru one time and no one has called me back. Cant even get anyone from the State Dept. to return my calls.

That sounds like the same report that was released for the original fighting on Nov. 5.. I hadn't heard anything new from today yet. Yesterday there was fighting in Reynosa and Tampico, but nothing was reported for Matamoros yesterday.... Oh crap... For what it's worth, some news from Matamoros:
Mexican troops clashed with gunmen from the Gulf cartel and Los Zetas in Matamoros, Tamaulipas state, along the Mexican border with the United States, The Brownsville Herald reported Dec. 2. Tractor-trailers blocked various avenues and main thoroughfares in an effort to prevent military vehicles from reaching the city, an unnamed Mexican law enforcement source said. The Los Tomates-Veterans International Bridge to Brownsville was shut down by authorities, a Mexican military source said. Mexican Marines, army troops and Federal Police were deployed throughout Matamoros, and military helicopters flew overhead. The fighting reportedly began when members of Los Zetas attempted to enter the city and the Gulf cartel confronted them. Several Gulf cartel strike teams were sent to Matamoros as reinforcements, including the Los Zeros, Los Ms and Los Lobos teams, a source said.

Richard so far the Mexican authorities are not helpful at all. They and not interested in 1 American getting lost. If we had enough money they would jump right on it. That city is a mess at the moment and no one wants to go asking questions anywhere

perhaps the local sheriff on the american side could help -the phone company will lilkely require a search warrant -are the mexican authorities /police helpfull?

Richard - It's a great question. Do you know if there's any way to get this kind of thing done without relying on the federal government? In my experience, everything the govt needs to be involved in gets ridiculously slowed down....
